Northeast Heights ranches, sixty years on
Most of the Heights went up after the war: block-and-stucco ranches from the 1950s through the 1970s, many with flat or low-slope roofs and a swamp cooler on top. Their wiring was sized for a different life. Today the same panel feeds a refrigerated-air conversion, a remodeled kitchen, a home office and maybe a car charger. That’s where breaker problems, warm connections and ‘probably fine’ panels show up, and where an honest evaluation pays for itself.
Older neighborhoods, older surprises
In Nob Hill, Huning Highlands, Barelas and the older parts of the North and South Valley, houses have been added on to for generations. Opening a wall can turn up ungrounded two-prong circuits, cloth-covered cable, splices with no box, or an addition fed from wherever was closest. None of it is unusual here, and all of it can be made right. PCM explains what was found before deciding anything.
Sun, wind and monsoon
High-desert sun cooks anything outdoors: exterior fixtures, outdoor outlet covers and the cable to rooftop equipment. Spring wind and summer monsoon lightning bring outages and surges. Whole-home surge protection, weather-rated outdoor devices and properly wired rooftop disconnects are part of everyday work in Albuquerque.
Permits and power
Inside city limits, electrical permits and inspections run through the City of Albuquerque’s building safety office; unincorporated parts of Bernalillo County go through the county. PCM handles the permits and inspections the work requires. PNM delivers the power and owns the meter.
Albuquerque questions
Asked in Albuquerque.
Is PCM Electrical based in Albuquerque?
Yes. PCM Electrical is an Albuquerque residential electrical contractor led by Phillip Montoya, serving homes across the city and the surrounding area. Call (505) 463-1276.
My Northeast Heights house still has its original panel. Should I worry?
Not automatically, but a 50 or 60-year-old panel deserves a look, especially if breakers trip often, the panel feels warm, or you’ve added refrigerated air, a hot tub or an EV. PCM can evaluate it, tell you plainly whether it’s fine, and lay out options if it isn’t.
Who issues electrical permits in Albuquerque?
Inside city limits, the City of Albuquerque issues electrical permits and performs inspections. In unincorporated Bernalillo County, the county handles them. Your electrician pulls the permit for the work they do; PCM handles the permits and inspections its jobs require.
Does PCM work on rooftop swamp coolers and HVAC?
PCM installs and repairs the electrical side: power disconnects for rooftop units, dedicated circuits and the wiring to them. The cooler or HVAC equipment itself is serviced by a heating and cooling contractor.
